While teaching fifth grade, my social studies class learned about the American Revolution and some of the heroic actions by the men during that time. I wondered what the contributions were by women. This led me to research little-known women who risked their lives to help the Patriots defeat the British. I was astonished at the daring escapades of these women and wanted their stories to be told. The result of my research was Spies, Soldiers, Couriers, and Saboteurs: Women of the American Revolution.
